• HISTORY

The history of singing bowls dates back to the Bon Po culture of the Himalayas, where legend has it that they were made from iron meteorites found in the mountains.

Singing bowls were initially used as ritual offerings to deities, and their sound had to be pure and universal. Tibetan singing bowls, made in Bhutan, Nepal, India, and Tibet, are said to have been used by the highest lamas in rituals to travel to other dimensions and worlds.

They are known to promote energy balance, reduce stress, balance brain hemispheres, and harmonize the body, spirit, and soul. Singing bowls contain seven metals, each for a different planet, with every metal producing its own unique sound and harmonic.

The sound and vibration produced by singing bowls are transmitted through the body's skeletal system and are used in various healing modalities.

Today, singing bowls are used by musicians, yoga teachers, body and mind therapists, and meditation practitioners, among others.

According to tradition, the bowls are made of seven metals. One metal for each planet:

  • FABRICATION

The time it takes to make a singing bowl varies depending on the size, complexity, and craftsmanship involved. Generally, it takes several days or even weeks to make a high-quality singing bowl by hand.

The process includes melting and casting the metal, hammering and shaping the bowl, tuning the pitch by hand, and adding finishing touches such as engravings and decorations.

Each step requires skill and precision, and the process is typically done by experienced artisans who have spent years honing their craft. Overall, the time it takes to make a singing bowl reflects the level of care and attention to detail put into each piece.

The metals are first melted down and then poured into a mold to form the basic shape of the bowl. The bowl is then hammered and shaped by hand using various tools, such as hammers and chisels, to achieve the desired size and thickness.

The final steps in the process involve the fine-tuning and polishing of the bowl. The bowl is struck with a mallet and tested for its tone and resonance, and then any necessary adjustments are made by carefully hammering and shaping the bowl. Once the bowl is tuned to the desired pitch, it is polished by hand to give it a smooth, shiny finish.

The crafting of singing bowls is a labor-intensive process that requires a great deal of skill and experience. Each bowl is unique and has its own character, which is a reflection of the individual craftsman's technique and style.

The craftsmanship of singing bowls has been passed down through generations, and there are still many skilled artisans today who continue to create these beautiful and powerful instruments by hand.
